Edel Quinn
Born in County Cork, Ireland, Edel Quinn originally intended to become a contemplative nun by joining the Poor Clares, but was prevented from doing so after being diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis.
Missionary Work: In 1936, despite her fragile health, she volunteered to go to Africa as an envoy for the Legion of Mary. Over nearly eight years, she traveled vast distances under difficult conditions across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, and Mauritius.
Legacy: She successfully established hundreds of local Legion branches and councils, playing a major role in the Catholic lay-apostolic movement by training local leadership. She died of tuberculosis in Nairobi, Kenya, at the age of 36. In 1994, Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable, an early step toward sainthood in the Catholic Church.
